Following undergraduate studies at both Bolton and Northumbria Universities and an MSc in Exercise Physiology from the University of Essex, Professor Dan Gordon was appointed at ARU in September 2000 with the remit of establishing a BSc programme in Sport Science. Dan attained his PhD by publication from ARU in 2012. He is a BASES accredited Exercise Physiologist, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy as well as a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He has published in excess of 140 papers and abstracts, and his textbook Coaching Science has been adopted in higher education institutions both in the UK and the USA. His research has brought together collaborations from across the world as well as with multi nationals including Google, FiBit and FCB. In 2020 he established the Exercise Physiology Summer School an Online programme attracting students and speakers from across the world. He holds an Honorary Lectureship and is an Associate Researcher at the Université Paris-Saclay as well as being the Patron for Living Sport in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Under the last Government Dan was appointed to the Parliamentary Panel for the Office of Science and Technology advising on the big trends within Culture Media and Sport. He is a regular contributor and panel member on the BBC Naked Scientist’s broadcast as well as on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC World News as well to articles in the Times, Telegraph and Daily Mail. He has written 22 articles for the Conversation garnering over 2.9 million reads. In addition, Dan worked as the Consultant Exercise Physiologist to the Great Britain Paralympic Team supporting athletes across three Paralympic cycles. As an athlete Dan competed for Team GB in three sports: Swimming, athletics and cycling, winning European medals in athletics for the triple and high jump. As a cyclist he completed at the 2004 Paralympic Games was European and World Champion and still holds a World Record which has stood for a remarkable 22 years.
